To Pot or Not?

You received your new tropical rhizomes and now what? Do you plant them in a pot or grow them directly in the ground? Below we created a quick and easy chart to help you decide what to do.

Overall we think both potting and planting directly in the ground has their pros and cons. If we have just collected a new one of a kind Heliconia, we always pot it and grow it in our greenhouse. We place it near a walkway so that we can keep an eye on it everyday to make everything is going alright. However, pots are extra work, less sustainable (increase plastic use) and cost more. We try to avoid potting when possible and use it only when necessary.

If you have any suggestions or comments on what worked for you, let us know below!
